We Care Fair
Residents of the Wayne County Nursing Home and Rehab Center went to the State Fair right in their own back yard on Thursday August 19th
The Food & Nutrition Department sponsored the Fair and it was headed by their cook Virginia Majewicz. Thirty five displays were available to view. The staff cafeteria was set up with several displays such as: I love NY, Nature, Arts & Crafts, Nutrition, Dairy Booth with free samples of milk and a Butter sculpture designed by Melissa Weimer and Virginia Majewicz. The Plant display was donated by: Kurt Wise and designed by Amy Scott. There was a Sand Sculpture designed by Dawn & Adam Keagle and Julie Major. There were beautiful Quilts some by Liz Zimmerman and Virginia Majewicz on display.
Residents displayed items that placed in the recent Wayne County Fair in Palmyra, 1st Place ribbon Phi Vo’s crocheted child’s purse, 2nd place beaded flower vase by Phi Vo, 2nd place ribbon – Eugene Heise –Indian beaded necklace, 3rd place ribbon –cross stitch needle point & 2nd place crocheted pot holders by Elizabeth Corteville and Joan Buisch designed a floral arrangement that place 1st in the We Care Fair. Residents had a great time doing hands on crafts such as squirt gun painting, rock painting and wood working . They were also treated to traditional fair goodies – Cotton Candy-donated by Pine Creek, Fried dough, popcorn ,snow cones, ice Cream, soft pretzels, funnel cakes and lemonade.
Kellogg’s donated a food display and T-shirts that several residents won as door prizes along with the Kellogg’s pop tarts & other snacks.
To enhance fair memories of days gone by there was a doll display and old fashion vegetable display. The We Care Bear greeted all the fair attendees compliments of Sodexo.
The midway was set up in the lower level hallway and you felt like you were actually at a fair with all the games that were set up such as: milk bottle knock down, ring toss, picking up ducks from a swimming pool and bowling all donated by Cassandra Rogers. Outside there was a 1948 replica tractor furnished by Dan Gross of Pickney & Maine from Auburn ,NY. There were 2 cub cadet mowers and chain saws donated by John Muir from Schleede’s equipment of Lyons who also gave out Logo hats. The petting zoo was provide from Burl Creek Farms – you could pet a lamb or baby calf and the Humane society brought baby kittens to hold & pet. The Wayne County Sheriff Dept. K-9 unit put on a demonstration with two of their dogs.
Down on “Entertainment Court” everyone had the opportunity to to throw a pie at a supervisor. The $1.00 a pie was a fund raiser sponsored by the FUNSIT Committee (Fun, satisfaction, improvement team). The Funsit committee sponsored a cake wheel - for a chance to win a special dessert.
There were so many comments made from Staff and residents that they really felt they went to the state fair. Resident Robert Muto stated, he really “enjoyed the K-9 unit demonstration it brought back memories of when he worked as a Deputy Sheriff.” Ed DeMarsh said, he “really got into looking at the tractors.” Gloria Schutt said” the best part of the fair was the games especially “Plinko” Most of the residents stated, “they liked everything it was so much fun and so well put together.”
