Daisy Marquis Jones Foundation Butterfly Beltway
Seneca park zoo presented a Program of the Daisy Marquis Jones Foundation Butterfly Beltway on July 9, 2009 to the Wayne County Nursing Home residents, staff, families, week of hope campers and members of the Palmyra Garden Club and the Wayne county nursing home foundation. Well over 80 people attended this unique and educational program. Tina Crandall the conservation Education Coordinator of the Seneca park zoo Society and two zoo teens did the presentation of the monarch life cycle and journey to South America. They provided visual aids as demonstration. All attendees were given an opportunity to see a monarch butterfly up close and have the butterfly rest on their back of their hand. In conclusion of the program there was the release of the butterflies. A few of the butterflies stayed close to the site enjoying the clover grass and the butterfly garden which is maintained by the Palmyra Garden club. Tina and the teens planted a new milkweed plant and spread mulch in the garden. The monarchs should find a happy home at the Wayne County Nursing Home’s Butterfly Garden before their journey south. They have everything they need to survive there are plants, pond close by and butterfly houses.
